The Top Six Reasons to See Six the Musical

Six The Musical

Written by DMPA Staff

Whether you are a fan of musical theater, pop music, or are just looking for a fun night out, you won't want to miss the hit Broadway musical SIX when it takes the Des Moines Civic Center stage this February!

This 80-minute, glitzy, high-energy musical is a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of King Henry VIII presented as a pop musical. Each Queen takes a turn singing and telling their story to see who suffered the most due to Henry and should, therefore, become the group’s lead singer.

With a stunning stage design, a talented all-female and non-binary company, and an unforgettable score, SIX is a must-see spectacle while it's in Des Moines from Feb. 7-19.

If glitz, high energy, and talent aren't enough to convince you to purchase tickets, here are six reasons you should reserve your seats to this global sensation today!

#1 THE MUSIC

The music is phenomenal. From pop hits to emotional ballads, the show's music is top-notch. The cast, each portraying one of Henry VIII's six wives, bring each Queen's distinct personality and story to life through their own personal songs.

#2 THE STORY

This isn't your typical history lesson!

Each Queen gets to tell their own story, in their own words, giving a fresh and modern take on their lives and struggles. Whether they were divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, or survived, each Queen is given the chance to tell their own stories and reclaim their identities, rather than being defined solely by their relationships with the King.

#3 THE COSTUMES

The Tony Award-winning costume design is absolutely stunning. You won't be able to take your eyes off these captivating outfits that add layers of meaning to the show. For example, the use of chokers on the characters of Boleyn and Howard serves as a visual representation of their tragic fate of beheading, while the depiction of Parr in pants symbolizes her liberation and empowerment, contrasting with the traditional portrayal of queens in dresses and skirts. The craftsmanship is impeccable, with intricate beading, luxurious fabrics, and stunning accessories contributing to an unforgettable experience for the audience.

#4 THE BAND ON STAGE

Get ready to rock out with SIX's amazing live band! Dubbed the 'Ladies in Waiting,' these ultra-talented artists bring an unbeatable level of energy and excitement to the performance. Pre-recorded music can't match the atmosphere they create. Plus, their adaptability to the changing styles and moods of the show is truly impressive, adding extra depth and emotion to the experience.

#5 THE MESSAGE

Instead of focusing on Henry, the show puts the experiences and perspectives of the Queens front and center. These powerful women take the stage and share their stories, using modern pop culture references and sass. Gone are the days of reducing these Queens to the rhyme "divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived." SIX offers a fresh and captivating take on her-story that you won't want to miss.
