John HARBISON                           Remembering Gatsby: Foxtrot for Orchestra

BEETHOVEN                              Piano Concerto No. 3

SHOSTAKOVICH                           Symphony No. 5

Jahja Ling, the first and only conductor of Chinese descent to hold a music director position with a major American orchestra, leads the Symphony in a program which begins with American composer John Harbison’s glittery, effervescent Remembering Gatsby. Rising star Janice Carissa plays Beethoven’s poetic Third Piano Concerto, equal parts turbulent and tender. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, composed under Stalin’s oppressive Soviet regime, expresses hope and despair alike in a dramatic cry of rebellion.
