Learning Through a Lens – Cristina Mittermeier
Coming soon to the Des Moines Civic Center is a speaker who will engage, inspire, and enlighten the entire audience. Join us for the next and final Explorer Speaker Series presentation, Aboard Sealegacy 1: Documenting Our Blue Planet, by conservation photographer Cristina Mittermeier.
Background
Cristina Goettsch Mittermeier graduated from the ITESM University in Mexico with a degree in Biochemical Engineering in Marine Sciences. Later on, she attended the Fine Art Photography program at the Corcoran College for the Arts in Washington D.C. Cristina has always been highly passionate about conservation photography, and learned that images and stories help us better understand abstract concepts, and motivate us to action as opposed to numbers and graphs. She then founded the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP). Years later, she co-founded SeaLegacy, a non-profit organization aimed at protecting and rewilding the ocean. SeaLegacy brings awareness to marine issues through storytelling, and hopes these stories drive further advocacy for the ocean.
Cristina has been highly successful and has earned many awards, including the Smithsonian Conservation Photographer of the Year Award, among numerous others. Not only is Cristina an accomplished photographer, but she is also known as an amazing keynote speaker. She has so much to share, and a way of expression that resonates with people. Cristina loves to share her passion through pictures, and to continually spread awareness of our responsibilities as humans.
