On November 14, 1943, Leonard Bernstein made one of the most dramatic debuts in Carnegie Hall’s  history when he stepped in at the last minute to conduct the New York Philharmonic for Bruno Walter. With no time for a rehearsal, the 25 year-old Bernstein led the orchestra through its program of Schumann, Rósza, Strauss, and Wagner. The concert, broadcast nationwide by CBS Radio, was a stunning success. Bernstein became famous overnight — and was immediately on his way to becoming one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. In this special concert, Joseph Giunta and the Des Moines Symphony, along with virtuoso cellist Julian Schwarz, recreate Bernstein’s historic 1943 broadcast as accompanying visuals and multimedia tell the story of the concert that launched the career of America’s most famous classical musician.
