TECHNICAL THEATER SCHOLARSHIP:

Applications for the Technical Theater Scholarship are now open for the 2022-23 school year! 

The scholarship is open to students advancing their theater training as a technical theater major or minor. One student will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship to be applied towards tuition at an accredited college/university. The scholarship is to be distributed $2,500 per year, renewable for up to four years pending qualifying academic status.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES:

Participating schools receive access to exclusive learning opportunities offered throughout the year that are designed to help both students and directors advance their understanding of the craft. Workshops and master classes addressing performance, technical and creative topics are led by theater professionals from the state of Iowa as well as by Broadway industry experts.

 

SIX COSTUME LOOK-IN (Registration for this opportunity has closed)

On Wednesday, February 15, from 4:30 - 5:30 PM, IHSMTA is partnering with the SIX tour to do a costume look in with wardrobe personnel. This will take place in the Stoner Theater, distanced from the tour staff. Masks are not required, but highly recommended. Registration is available for all IHSMTA schools but is best suited for those with interest in costume design and/or for those attending a performance of SIX at DMPA.

ACTING THE SONG WORKSHOP (This opportunity has ended):

We are offering an “Acting the Song” workshop on December 15 & 16 at the Temple Theater (1011 Locust St, Des Moines, IA 50309) for registered IHSMTA schools. This opportunity will be FREE for all participants from registered schools. Four sessions will be offered:

  • December 15, 9 AM – 12 PM
  • December 15, 1 – 4 PM
  • December 16, 9 AM – 12 PM
  • December 16, 1 – 4 PM

PLEASE NOTE: This workshop is capped at 16 students per session, as such, each school may register up to 8 students across all sessions. Sessions will be filled first come, first serve.

This workshop is ideal for high school performers who want to explore, collaborate, and learn new tools to create unique, connected interpretations of their material. Students can expect to learn new terminology, to engage in character analysis and physical exercises, receive personalized feedback on their selection, and to have the opportunity to implement that feedback the same day.

WHAT STUDENTS SHOULD BRING

  • A full musical theatre song they are familiar with/want to workshop, with a 32-bar cut fully prepared
  • A printed copy of their sheet music (piano-vocal) formatted to be double sided, 3-hole punched, and placed in a binder for use by accompanist
  • A printed copy of their lyrics typed/written out

STAGE MANAGEMENT INTENSIVE (This opportunity has ended):

For our first learning opportunity for the 22-23 school year, we are offering a stage management intensive on Thursday, September 29, 2022, 9:30 AM – 3:00 PM at the Civic Center (221 Walnut St, Des Moines) for registered IHSMTA schools. This opportunity, including a catered lunch, will be FREE for all participants from registered schools.

This opportunity is directed open to all directors and students from 2022-2023 IHSMTA participating schools. The workshop is primarily intended for student stage managers, directors and other adults in technical roles, and students serving in a technical role in their high school musical production(s) who would benefit from a stronger understanding of stage management practices.

Please utilize the following items after your school musical closes.

    (Honor the adults who had an impact on your production by nominating them for an Impact Award.)

Adjudicator feedback will be sent to school contacts via email within three weeks of a school's production closing, unless otherwise communicated.
