PUSH YOUR PERFORMANCE SKILLS TO NEW HEIGHTS!

Dreaming of being in a show or already performing in musicals? The Virtual Broadway Academy is designed for middle school students in grades 6-8 who thrill at the thought of performing in a musical. These five days of personalized online instruction bring experienced guest Broadway performers and university faculty members to lead sessions in the triple threat areas of musical theater – acting, dancing, and singing.

Private coaching sessions, small group workshops, and Q&As with special Broadway guests will help you dig into the world of Broadway and prepare you for your next chapter as a young performer. Faculty will begin with each participant at his or her ability level and lead them through activities designed to appropriately stretch their skills.

No audition is necessary, although previous experience in music, dance or acting is recommended; a willingness to jump in and try in all areas required.

For students entering grades 6-8, fall 2020.

Through the Virtual Broadway Academy, each student will participate in at minimum:

  • Daily group dance class
  • 4 small group acting sessions
  • 2 25-minute private voice lessons
  • 2 25-minute Acting a Song coaching sessions
  • 4 Q&As with special Broadway industry guests
  • Culminating online sharing event

HOW THE ACADEMY WILL BE STRUCTURED ONLINE

Camp activities will take place between 9:30 and 4:45 PM each day, with each student having a slightly different schedule based on times assigned for private coaching, lessons and small group work. Plenty of time will be built in for breaks to step away from Zoom, to either practice on your own, prepare for your next session or to recharge.

You can count on all students being called for camp activities from 11 AM – 1:15 PM each day, with a break for lunch or social time. Private lessons and small group work will be scheduled to occur between 9:30-11 AM and 1:15-4:45 PM. Prior to the start of the week, you’ll fill out a scheduling poll to help us assign you to your personalized sessions.

Monday’s schedule will include some additional orientation sessions, as students prepare for their first private coaching sessions on Tuesday.

The week-end online sharing for family and friends will begin at 5:30 PM on Friday, July 24.

SESSION DATES

The Virtual Broadway Academy will be held Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 24.

EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

The week is designed for young performers with a strong interest in musical theater. No audition is necessary, although previous experience in music, dance or acting is recommended; a willingness to jump in and try in all areas required.

Each participant is also expected to prepare 1-2 musical theater songs for the week to use in coaching sessions. We are working with an accompanist to record an mp4 accompaniment track for one of your songs in advance of the week. This mp4 accompaniment track will be yours to keep for future auditions or performances with your selected song. Any additional items you may need will be communicated before camp starts.

TECHNOLOGY AND MATERIALS

We will be using Zoom. To successfully participate, you will need a laptop, tablet, smart phone or computer with a webcam (internal or external), reliable internet connection and an additional device from which to play your song's accompaniment track. Please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns about your ability to participate due to a lack of access to technology.  Any additional items you may need will be communicated before camp starts.

TUITION

The Virtual Broadway Academy carries a registration fee of $285.
