COMMUNITY SPOKEN WORD WORKSHOPS

April 21 - May 19, 2018 Des Moines Civic Center

Inspired by the themes of HAMILTON

Community members ages 8 to 108 are invited to participate in spoken word workshops inspired by the themes of HAMILTON. Teaching artists from Movement 515 will lead interactive workshops around writing prompts such as leaving a legacy, fighting for what you believe in, and overcoming obstacles. Participants will draft spoken word poems drawing from their personal stories and experiences, experiment with basic poetic techniques, and share in-progress pieces in front of a supportive audience. No previous poetry or spoken word experience is required to participate.

To culminate, participants are invited to return in June for an open community slam, in which they may perform their completed poems. Community judges will award honors in both a youth and an adult category, with top poets winning tickets to HAMILTON during its sold-out Des Moines engagement.

No advance registration required. Free to participate.

You Make The Difference

"The dollar ticket price [for the Applause Series shows] is unbelievable. Without it, we would't be able to come. The people who support this program need to be applauded because it gives kids great opportunities."
