BROADWAY SUMMER INTENSIVE 2019

July 15 - 22, 2019

A six-day experience to give you more opportunities to develop your skills!

GET ON THE WAIT LIST!

Guest Broadway performers lead teens in a weeklong series of master classes on the “triple threat” skills of musical theater – acting, dancing and singing. Participants sharpen their performance skills, gain knowledge about the auditioning and casting process, and learn about the Broadway industry from working professionals. The week culminates in a showcase for family and friends. Auditions are not required, although previous theater training or experience is necessary.

For teens entering grades 9 through first year of college, fall 2019.

SESSION DATES AND HOURS

One six-day session of BROADWAY SUMMER INTENSIVE will be offered:
July 15-20, 2019

Hours: Camp begins at 9 AM and ends promptly at 5 PM (M-F) and from 9 AM until 3 PM on Saturday. Students may be dropped off in the morning between 8:45-9 AM.

Final showcase is Saturday at 2 PM. (No tickets necessary for family and friends to attend.)

Location:
Monday-Friday at Mainframe Studios, 900 Keosauqua Way, Des Moines.  Students may enter the building at 8:45 AM.

Saturday's Showcase at Des Moines Civic Center, 221 Walnut Street, Des Moines.

EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

The week is designed for aspiring performers who are highly interested in musical theater. Auditions are not required to participate; however, previous training or experience is necessary. (We recommend that participants have experience in at least two of the following areas: singing, dance and acting.)

Each participant is also expected to prepare 1-2 musical theater songs for the week to use in coaching sessions.

In advance of camp starting, you will be asked to submit a brief placement video utilizing one of your musical theater songs. Faculty will review to assist them in their preparations for the week. Specific details about the process for submitting your placement video will be provided as the camp dates near.

Due to the intense rehearsal schedule, participation in the showcase performance is dependent on full attendance throughout the week. Missed rehearsals may necessitate that a participant give up part or all of his or her roles for the success of the overall performance.

FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS

The Broadway Summer Intensive carries a registration fee of $495, which includes a daily snack; participants are asked to bring a sack lunch each day.

(Pay in full at time of registration or in four equal installments. Payment plans only available for registrations received prior to March 22, 2019.)

We want to make sure that camp is accessible to all. Please check out details on our SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM if financial assistance is needed to allow you to participate.

Scholarship applications should be submitted BEFORE registering for the intensive and may be submitted beginning Monday, January 21, 2019.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Your participation is very important to the overall success of your selected camp, but we understand that summer plans sometimes change. In the event that you are no longer able to participate, please submit notice of your camp cancellation to education@desmoinesperformingarts.org.

Written notice of cancellation must be received six weeks prior to the first date of the camp in order for a refund to be issued.

If a cancellation is submitted less than six weeks prior to the camp start date, a refund will only be issued if we are able to secure a new registration to fill the vacated spot.

“While singing, I learned how to interpret each line of a song and express the feeling of it without actually 'showing' it. When I was acting, I learned not to actually 'act' but instead to experience a scene as myself in certain circumstances.”
-Logan, Past Participant

“I’ve really learned how to get out of my comfort zone. I’ve always heard 'don’t be afraid to make mistakes' but this week it really clicked, and I know it will forever change my acting career as well as just a person.”
-Lauryn, Past Participant

“One thing I’ve learned is that it is more realistic to feel the experience than ‘show’ the experience. Another thing I’ve learned is that it is more important to make a strong choice than just being correct when dancing in an audition.”
-Beca, Past Participant
