VIVA LA MUSICA! VIVA LA CULTURA!
LAS CAFETERAS (UNITED STATES)
Born and raised east of the Los Angeles river, Las Cafeteras are remixing roots music and telling modern-day stories of Latino and immigrant lives.
In this special performance for school audiences, Las Cafeteras engages youth in an exciting celebration of Mexican-American culture through lively songs, powerful story-sharing, and inspiring messages! With LOVE as their first language and accompanied by traditional instruments, Las Cafeteras invite folks of ALL AGES to share the stories of their own cultures and communities with dancing and sing-alongs in English, Spanish (and Spanglish)!
We will learn about traditional Son Jarocho instruments like the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone) and tarima (a wooden platform), and groove to a remix of sounds from rock to hip-hop to rancheras.

We anticipate health and safety protocols to evolve as performances progress. Reservation contacts should expect an email detailing specific protocols for all guests — including students — entering DMPA venues closer to the date of their performance(s).
Throughout the shutdown our team has consulted with state and local leaders as well as monitored CDC guidance to prepare for your safe return to our facilities. Enhancements include: updating our HVAC systems with new filters, adjusting for increased fresh air circulation and adding portable air filtration systems in key areas of the venue.
We want you to feel confident when making reservations for your group. Please be aware of the following considerations when making your reservation:
- Audience capacities for upcoming school performances will typically not allow for physically-distanced seating.
- Des Moines Performing Arts reserves the right to require masks for audience members and staff. Decisions about mask guidelines for each show will take into consideration guidance from the CDC and local health officials, as well as current conditions in Polk and surrounding counties.
Your loyalty has protected the arts through this intermission and we are delighted to welcome you back to live performances. Thank you for your continued support!

"The fact that our son was working with Broadway professionals and getting vocal and acting lessons from people who actually acted on Broadway was stunning."
