Indomitable Waltz
Malpaso Dance Company (Cuba)
Grades 6-12
Malpaso, which ironically means “misstep”, is dedicated to re-defining how the world thinks of Cuban dance! Since its founding in 2012, the young, Havana-based company has received critical and popular acclaim on the international stage for its signature blend of contemporary choreography, superb technical skills, and vision for what Cuban dance is today.
This special program for school audiences showcases Malpaso’s commitment to cultural exchange – both through collaborating with top international choreographers as well as new voices in Cuban choreography.
Anticipated repertoire (subject to change):
Indomitable Waltz
This 8-dancer work by Canadian choreographer Aszure Barton is an exploration of the soul under extreme emotional circumstances. Composed in a series of vignettes, Indomitable Waltz features relaxed body parts moving harmoniously but also in surprisingly different directions.
Ocaso
This visually captivating duet by Cuban choreographer and company cofounder, Osnel Delgado, explores the give and take that exists in the relationship between two people. With a cycle of unison and solo movements, as well as circular patterns, the two draw apart and back together time and again until the duet’s dramatic conclusion.
Please note: all children who enter the theater for this production must have a ticket and be at least three years old.
