IOWA HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER AWARDS SHOWCASE - CANCELLED

In the face of the ever-changing circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 virus, Des Moines Performing Arts has cancelled this event. 

The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards is a year-long program providing high schools across our state with valuable feedback from trained adjudicators. A significant number of participating school productions were also unable to be performed as scheduled due to school closures. 

Despite these challenges, the IHSMTA program remains committed to supporting students and drama programs across the state during this time. 

To that end, a special Digital IHSMTA Showcase has been launched online. It features videos, photo galleries and other special content from students and the 86 participating schools, with new content added regularly. View the Digital IHSMTA Showcase HERE.

In addition, the IHSMTA program is hosting a series of virtual webinars and master classes for participating students throughout April and May. The learning opportunities will cover a variety of performance and technical topics, such as stage management, dance, college auditions, and weekly Broadway trivia.

Feel the energy of hundreds of amazing student performers representing 86 participating Iowa high schools, as they share highlights from their award-winning school musicals!

This unforgettable evening of entertainment is a celebration of the important contributions of Iowa’s high school drama programs. Throughout the year, theater professionals traveled across the state to review high school musical productions. Now, students from those schools will come together to share highlights from their productions on the Civic Center stage and to receive honors for their work in performance, technical and creative categories. In addition, students will work under the direction of a guest music director and choreographer from New York City to give the best performances of their young lives. You’ll even see dreams come true when two students learn they will represent Iowa at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City this summer.

This is a not-to-be-missed evening for anyone who loves musicals and believes in the power of the arts to impact young people.
