AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS

The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards recognizes the 2019-2020 achievements of the 54 participating productions that were able to perform their musicals as scheduled. While 34 participating schools were unfortunately unable to perform their musicals due to the global pandemic, we encourage you to visit our Virtual Stage as we celebrate all participating schools.

Outstanding Musical Production

This cumulative award honors high achievements across all performance, technical and creative areas. It is considered the program’s top honor.

Outstanding Overall Performance

This cumulative award honors high achievements across all performance areas, including principal roles, ensemble, and orchestra.

Outstanding Overall Technical and Creative Achievement

This cumulative award honors high achievements across all technical and creative areas, including scenic design, lighting, costuming and sound.

Outstanding Community Engagement

Theater inherently has the power to move, enlighten and to promote change. The Community Engagement Award is presented to schools that utilize their production and its themes in a meaningful way to make a difference within their communities.

Impact Award

The Impact Award is a student-nominated award which recognizes educators and community members who go above and beyond to support the high school musical experience.

TECHNICAL THEATER SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsored by Doug & Debbie West

The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Technical Theater Scholarship is open to students advancing their theater training as a technical theater major or minor. Annually, one student will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship to be applied towards tuition at an accredited college/university. The scholarship is to be distributed $2,500 per year, renewable for up to four years pending qualifying academic status.

Outstanding Achievement in a Technical, Creative or Business Role

Students were considered for honors for their technical, creative or business roles based on the creation of a portfolio and a follow-up interview.

Honorary Assistant Stage Managers

Even though the Awards Showcase this year is in a digital format, two students were selected to be a part of the Honorary Assistant Stage Manager team. These students completed an application and interview with Awards Showcase Stage Manager Janet Albanese, and we are happy to award these two exceptional student stage managers with this honor.
